How Nier: Automata Found Me—And Changed Everything
Back in 2019, I was just a high school junior trying to make sense of a world that didn’t seem to make much sense at all.
Then COVID-19 hit.
Schools closed. Streets went silent.
Suddenly, the world felt distant, like it had folded in on itself.
We were all stuck indoors, pretending online classes were “normal,” when really, everything felt hollow.
Like so many others, I drifted through those days on my phone—scrolling, tapping, existing.
I was young. I was confused. And if I’m honest… I was lost.
And then, in the middle of that digital haze, I stumbled upon something unexpected.
It was just an image at first—something I saw while aimlessly browsing, probably somewhere I wasn’t even supposed to be.
A woman in a black dress.
Silver hair.
A blindfold.
She looked strong, yet broken. Cold, yet gentle.
Her name was 2B.
I didn’t know who she was, but I had to find out.
A quick search led me to a game I’d never heard of before: Nier: Automata.
Not a movie, not an anime—something else. Something different.
Something deeper.
The problem was, I didn’t own a gaming console or a PC that could run it.
But I was hooked. So I turned to YouTube.
That’s when I discovered Venomous Sight.
A channel that didn’t just summarize the game—it *breathed* it.
With breakdowns, lore dives, references to Grimoire Nier and the side novels, it pulled me into a universe I never saw coming.
I wasn’t just watching videos anymore.
I was *feeling* them.
And then… I cried.
More than once.
Watching 2B follow orders she didn’t believe in, seeing 9S fall apart piece by piece, hearing A2 whisper to ghosts no longer there…
It wasn’t just a story.
It felt like someone had written this for me—for all of us who were hurting, questioning, searching.
The loneliness, the identity crises, the endless cycle of death and rebirth…
In a time when the world outside felt cold and disconnected, this game reached out through the screen and touched something in me.
I knew I had to play it for real.
So I saved.
Eventually, I bought the game.
And I dove in.
I laughed with 9S’s curiosity.
I grieved with 2B’s silence.
I held my breath as A2 stood at the edge of everything, wondering if any of it still mattered.
And then I reached Ending E.
Hope.
That’s what it was.
A quiet, defiant hope that said: “Even after all of this, there’s still a way forward.”
But then the game did something I’ll never forget.
It asked me to let go.
My data. My journey. My saves.
Everything.
I gave it all up… for someone else.
And in return?
Nothing.
No cinematic. No confirmation. Just silence.
I remember yelling at the screen.
“You could’ve at least shown me they lived! You could’ve shown me it worked!”
But maybe… that was the point.
Nier: Automata isn’t about certainty.
It’s about *faith*.
Doing something kind without knowing if it matters.
Loving something broken without needing it to be whole.
Since then, I’ve played the game over and over.
Every time, I notice something new.
A line I missed. A moment I didn’t catch the first time.
And every time, it still hurts.
In the best, most beautiful way.
It’s been six years.
And I’m still waiting.
Still hoping.
Still wondering when the next Nier will come.
Yoko Taro—if by some miracle you’re reading this:
Please. Bring them back.
Bring us back.
I’ve been waiting six years… and I’m still not done crying over these androids.
Nier: Automata didn’t just entertain me.
It healed me.
It held my hand in the dark.
It reminded me that sorrow can be beautiful, sacrifice can be meaningful, and hope can survive even the end of the world.
And so, I’ll keep waiting.
Because if Nier taught me anything…
It’s that some stories are worth the pain.
And worth the wait.
